The Smith boys (there were 5 who went to the CW) made a pact that the survivors would take care of the families of those who did not survive--3 returned. Thomas R. was killed in the Battle of the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania Courthouse. on 12 May 1864--one day before his 36th birthday.
