NC Genealogical Society Journal, Nov 1997, p. 405:
Thomas R. Smith and Matilda G. Ballard. 9 February 1855. Bondsman:
William C. Morris.
Witness: Nathaniel Knight, John McLennan CC. Md. 28 February
1855 by N. Knight, J.P.
Wm. C. Morris was a Private in Co. F 44th Reg't NC Infantry C.S.A.
He enlisted March 1, 1862 in Troy, NC. On one of the records
it says "Deserted June, 1, 1863", however on another
record dated June 10, 1863 and recorded at C.S.A. General Hospital,
Danville, Virginia it states he is in the hospital and returned
to duty on June 19, 1863. He must have been recorded as deserted
in error as he was ill and in the hospital or trying to get to
a hospital.
