File Transfer:
FTP is file transfer protocol. You are transferring files using a specific kind of connection from your PC to the internet, or from the internet to your PC. This is called a protocol. All web hosts provide an FTP server. The software you use to connect to that server is often up to you.

FTP software like WS-FTP use a graphical interface front end to help you transfer multiple files at the same time and easier manage your web space, folders and the files themselves. It also allows you to use a drag-n-drop method to moving your files, instead of typing all the file names.
FTP Software:
Most web hosting services provide a tool for transferring your pages from your PC to their host. Some of them are well developed and function easily. Others, are actually a pain in the behind. AOL's FTP (keyword: FTP) is a perfect example. It requires the developer to name the file to be transferred, than transfer the file to their servers...one file at a time. But there are alternatives.

One of the best is a package called WS_FTP, by ISPWitch. It comes in a 16 and 32 bit version, and functions like a File Manager. You can upload multiple files at the same time, manage your web environment by creating, deleting or renaming directories and files.

There are 2 versions of WS-FTP. A Light version which is free. And a professional version which isn't. I don't remember how much it costs. Even for what I do as a web manager, the pro version is more than I need. So I stick with the free version.
